Repeated infections can lead to concern when they represent a pattern outside of expected. Children will often have upper respiratory infections (otits or ear infections) as a normal part of development. Exposure to virus and bacterial infections increases as the number of contacts increases (day care and primary school classrooms). If the number of respiratory infections is excessive and leads to intensified medical care such as surgery or hospitalization children and adults should have evaluation of potential allergy and immune system function.
Simple tests can determine if common air borne allergy are causing tissue to swell leading to recurrent infection of the upper respiratory tract. Simple blood work can screen for potential immune dysfunction in any age group. Identifying the cause for the increased pattern of infection can often make a big difference in overall health.
